We recognize the uniqueness of each child as we foster life-long spiritual, intellectual, social, psychological and physical growth.

PHILOSOPHY

At St. Lucy School the administration and faculty endeavor to build a faith community based on Gospel values. We cherish our partnership with parents and recognize that with the family we share the educational mission of the Church. We acknowledge the rich, multicultural background of our children as well as each childs uniqueness. It is our goal that all students feel accepted, develop self-esteem, learn according to their God-given ability and grow in awareness of the needs of others within the context of our societys challenges and transitions.

It is our commitment to foster spiritual, intellectual, social, psychological and physical health in our students. To do this we guide each students growing awareness of Gods personal love and response to Christs invitation to follow and serve Him throughout life. With our help students deepen their knowledge and appreciation of our Catholic faith and Church in order to contribute to its growth and effectiveness in the 21st century. We develop each students full academic potential in a positive atmosphere of Christian principles and critical and creative thought. We aim to help each student become a well-integrated person with a healthy self-concept. We assist students in dealing with their individual problems by fostering an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect based on Christian values. We nurture in our students an understanding of their moral responsibility in society in the areas of compassion, peace and justice. Finally, we encourage our students to maintain their physical well-being and health.

We work to achieve these goals by our personal example, how and what we teach in the classroom, and our effective partnership with parents and students.

ST. LUCY CHURCH AND PARISH HISTORY
2344 Cota Avenue
Long Beach, CA 90810

It is our Pride and Joy to this community to celebrate the fiftieth Anniversary of the founding of this great Parish. The Archbishop of Los Angeles, Most Reverend John J. Cantwell, established St. Lucy Parish on July 6, 1944. Fr. Michael Lalor was appointed the first Pastor. On Sunday, July 9, the first mass was celebrated at 2565 Washington St. in Davidson City (now Dominguez) at 8:30 a.m. and in the navy Housing Recreation center at 20th and Rover sts. At 10:30 a.m.

All the parish property was purchased while Fr. Lalor was pastor. The church was the first building to be constructed and mass was celebrated there for the first time on Sunday, September 2, 1945. The mass schedule was 6:30, 8:30, 10:30 and 12:00. At that time this parish was pre-dominantly Irish Catholic. Today the mass schedules are 6:30, 8:30, 9:30, 11:15, 1:00, 3:00, and 5:00 on Sunday and enjoy the rich diversity of cultures. Archbishop Cantwell dedicated the Church on November 18, 1945.

The hall was built in 1947. The school was completed in 1950 and the convent in 1951. The rectory was originally located at 2230 Cota Ave. when the school was being erected two Navy Houses were moved from the school site and joined together to form the present rectory.

Fr. Hugh Regan was appointed the second pastor in May of 1949 and continued to serve until November 1971. Fr. John Jr. Keller then became the third pastor and served until September 1975. Nineteen assistant pastors have been assigned here. Those who served for more than a year were Fathers Thomas O'Connell, Charles O'Gorman, John J. Mallon, Lawrence O'Leary, Daniel McLaughlin, Sylvester O'Bryne, Cyril Navin, Lorenzo de Dominici and James F. Hatnett.

The Missionary Sisters of St. Augustine, which joined the community of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1963, replaced the Sisters of Mary Mother of God in 1954, which originally staffed the school; there was a complete lay staff in 1971 and 1972. From 1973 - 1976 the Dominicans Sisters partially staffed the school. At present lay faculty staffs the school.

The first organization begun in St. Lucy Church was the Altar Society, which held its first meeting in July of 1944. The Parents Club was organized to assist the school in 1951. The Guadalupana Society was formed in 1971 and the Legion Of Mary in 1972.

On October 1, 1975 Fathers Laurence Joy and Robert J. Pizzorno were appointed Co-pastors. In September of 1976, an eight-month process of forming a parish council was initiated. Elections were held in April 1977 and the first parish council was installed at Sunday mass on May 1, 1977. There are presently nine standing committees, which were developed during the formation period in response to expressed need of parishioners.

The committees are: Building and Maintenance, Christian Service, Fellowship, Finance, Parish School, prayer and Worship, Reach Out, Religious Education, and Youth.

According to the Constitution. "The Parish council of St. Lucy Church, Long Beach is the means through which all parishioners may share the rewarding responsibility for the life of the local church. The goal of the Parish Council is to assist in the continuing process of building community through growth in faith, love and service so that Jesus Christ may continue to be incarnate in our world."

Fr. Richard Miskella was pastor during the decade of the 80's Fr. Ted Llanos was appointed pastor in the early 90's. After two administrators (Fr. Don Kribbs and Fr. Bob Rankin) Fr. Mike Roebert was appointed as the 7th pastor of St. Lucy's in July of 1996.

Since that time, landscaping, painting, paving have continued to enhance the parish site. The new school library and offices, new shrine and patio area and church terrace have provided additional space for parish activities. Meeting rooms have been named after the former pastors (Lalor Room, Joy Room, Regan Room) dedicated workers (Angel Room) and the regional Bishop (Joseph Hall).

Well into the new Millennium we continue to rejoice in the presence of the Daughters of Charity, strong pastoral staff and dedicated lay ministers. Our schools, religious studies and candidates for sacraments continue to grow. We are proud of our diverse ethnic families who continue to work together to allow St. Lucy's to grow and fulfill our Mission Statement.
